The new version version 2.0 of the free txtr iPhone app recently released boasts with the ability to display Adobe DRM protected EPUBs. A really nice feature if there wasn’t a catch: it only seems to work smoothly with eBooks you purchased via the txtr Store.

Regional licenses as obstacles

For foreign users this is the obstacle – I quote Joscha’s (txtr staff) commentary on this topic on teleread.org:

As some of you know, I am working at txtr. You know what? We can not sell our books to you, no matter how much we want to. – Because books come with regional licenses, and even though they are just a bunch of bytes floating through the intarwebs, the current rights situation limits where we are allowed to let them flow to. So, no txtr Store in the US of A for now. Until we have acquired American licenses, and implemented a process to separate our platform into different regions.

On the other hand, it is technically possible to import Adobe DRM files that you have bought elsewhere into the txtr application. But at the moment that would require a working DRM pairing between your Adobe ID and txtr, which at the moment won’t work without a German authentication (usually via credit card). This is not a legal, but only a technical problem, however, and we will build a solution for it soon.

Translation of the official workaround

Until future versions of txtr.com will support the upload of “.asm” files from other eBook shops, for German users txtr has provided a work around which enables you to read any Adobe DRM-protected EPUB in the txtr iPhone app. Even though it seems not to work for non-German users I made a complete translation of the original German post by Birte (txtr staff) in the official txtr blog which gives the instructions – maybe it’s of some use to you if you somehow happen to get this German authentication (use at your own risk!): Mehr…

Die schon auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse angekündigte Version 2 der txtr iPhone-Anwendung ist seit kurzem über den App Store erhältlich. Besitzer eines iPhones oder eines iPod touchs können sich das kostenlose Tool hier herunterladen.

Die überarbeitete zweite Version der txtr-Anwendung war schon vor Wochen fertiggestellt worden,  hing jedoch im Apple-Loop fest. Heiß erwartet wurde das Tool vor allem wegen dem angekündigtem Feature, EPUBs mit Adobe-Kopierschutz zu unterstützen.

Mit einiger Verzögerung ist dies nun möglich: Dank der Version 2.0 lassen sich auch auf dem iPhone oder iPod touch DRM-geschützte eBooks im EPUB-Format lesen.  Der direkte Kauf von eBooks über den txtr Store ist jedoch noch nicht möglich, dafür ist immer noch der Umweg über einen Rechner nötig.

Wer die neue Funktion testen will, aber erstmal noch kein Geld für eBook ausgeben will, der sollte heute bei libreka vorbeischauen. Im libreka-Adventskalender gibt es heute im Rahmen des Download Days nämlich zwei kostenlose eBooks mit Adobe-DRM:

Da ich selbst nicht zu den iPhone-Besitzern zähle, würde ich mich über eure Rückmeldungen freuen: Verlief das Update der iPhone-Anwendung bei euch erfolgreich? Hattet ihr Probleme beim aktivieren eures Gerätes bei Adobe? Seid ihr zufrieden mit der Darstellung der EPUB-Dokumente?

Update 11:45h: Vielen Dank an Johannes von lesen.net für den Hinweis: Bisher funktionieren scheinbar nur über den txtr Store erworbene EPUBs/PDFs ohne weiteres mit der txtr App v2.

Wie Ronnie Vuine über Twitter anmerkte, soll es mit ein wenig “Gebastel” aber möglich sein, auch Dokumente von anderen Anbietern, wie etwa die obigen eBooks von Libreka, mit der txtr App anzuzeigen. Eine entsprechende Anleitung soll noch heute folgen.

Mit der neuen Beta 7 “Meister” feierte gestern der eBook-Store auf txtr.com Premiere. Bereits jetzt sind mehrere Tausend Titel vom Roman bis zum Kochbuch verfügbar. In den nächsten Wochen soll die Zahl kontinuierlich anwachsen, unter anderem auch um englischsprachige Bücher.

Bis zum 14. Oktober, wenn der offizielle Startschuss für den txtr eBook reader auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse fallen soll, dürfte dann ein mehr als ausreichendes Angebot auf alle frischgebackenen txtr-Besitzer warten.

Beim Format hat sich txtr.com mit den Verlagen auf den EPUB-Standard geeinigt. Gekaufte eBooks können somit zwar nicht beliebig weitergegeben werden, aber nach entsprechender Aktivierung immerhin auf bis zu sechs Geräten (txtr reader, PC, Smartphone) gleichzeitig genutzt werden.

Wer sein eBook am Computer lesen will, der benötigt dafür Adobe Digital Editions und eine Adobe ID.  Hier ist zu wünschen, dass bald auch andere Software-Reader DRM-geschützte EPUBs öffnen können, damit der Kunde mehrere Alternativen zur Wahl hat. Auch die iPhone-Application von txtr kann derzeit (noch) kein DRM-EPUB wiedergeben.
